Police Officer
Police Officers serve as the front line of law enforcement in our community. Responsibilities include enforcing state and local laws, preventing and investigating crimes, ensuring traffic safety, and participating in community policing and outreach programs. Officers may also be assigned to specialized units such as investigations, school resource, traffic enforcement, or tactical response. Shifts are typically worked on a 12-hour rotation.
- General - Must be a U.S. citizen, or a permanent resident who has applied for U.S. citizenship.
- Age - Minimum 21 years of age at the time of academy graduation. No maximum age.
- Education - High school diploma or GED required; college coursework or degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience - Prior work experience demonstrating responsibility, integrity, and ability to work with the public. Military service or prior police work is considered an asset.
- Licensing/Certification - Valid Illinois Driver’s License required at the time of hire. Successful completion of the Illinois Basic Law Enforcement Academy is required. Current Illinois certified officers may be considered for lateral entry.
Police Dispatcher
Police Dispatchers are the critical communication link between the public and emergency responders. They receive, evaluate, and prioritize 911 and non-emergency calls, dispatch police units, and coordinate response using radio, phone, and computer-aided dispatch systems. Dispatchers also maintain records, logs, and related administrative documentation. Shifts are typically on a 12-hour rotation.
- Education - High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional coursework or training in communications, emergency dispatching, or public safety is preferred.
- Experience - Prior experience in telecommunications or emergency services dispatching is desirable but not required.
- Skills - Must be able to type at least 40 wpm and multitask in high-pressure situations.
- Licensing/Certification - Must successfully complete Illinois LEADS certification (Law Enforcement Agencies Data System) and any state-mandated training for emergency communications operators.
Community Services Officer
Community Service Officers are non-sworn personnel who support law enforcement by handling specialized duties that do not require arrest powers. Responsibilities include taking crime and accident reports, directing traffic, assisting with non-injury crashes, and responding to quality-of-life issues. CSOs also assist with community education programs and provide general information to residents. Shifts are typically four 10-hour days per week.- Education - High school diploma or equivalent required. An associate degree or coursework in criminal justice, communications, psychology, or related fields is desirable.
- Experience - At least two years of responsible work experience involving direct public contact. Experience in law enforcement or security is helpful.
- Licensing/Certification - Must hold a valid Illinois Driver’s License. Additional state training requirements will be provided after hire.
Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol
The Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol program provides an opportunity for older adults to serve their community in partnership with the police department. RSVP members assist with patrol support, wellness checks (such as the “You Are Not Alone” program), clerical work, traffic control, and community events. This is a volunteer position requiring a minimum of one 6-hour shift per week.
- Age - Must be at least 50 years old.
- Education - High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- License - Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Other - Must pass a background check and successfully complete RSVP training provided by the department.
